Parenting Our Parents: A New Season of Life
Plot Twist: Now It’s Our Turn to Care for Them
Life has a way of flipping the script when you least expect it. One minute, we’re calling our parents for advice, and the next, we’re coordinating doctor appointments, medication schedules, and wondering how the heck we became the adults in charge.
These past few months, my sisters and I have stepped into a new, heartwarming, and slightly daunting role—caregiving for our aging parents. As a physical therapist with over 30 years of experience, I thought I knew what to expect. But when it’s your own parents? Whew. It hits different.
Some days, I feel like I’m absolutely crushing it. Other days, I realize it’s 3 PM, and I’ve forgotten to eat lunch. (Sound familiar?) This season of life is a wild mix of love, learning, and occasionally laughing to keep from crying. If you’re on this journey too, here’s what I’ve learned so far:
1. Go with the flow
Every day is a new adventure—some run smoothly, others… not so much. There’s no perfect plan, so embrace the chaos, adjust as needed, and just take it one moment at a time.
2. Don’t forget about YOU
Seriously. Take the break, schedule the walk, sip the coffee while it’s still hot. You can’t pour from an empty cup, and caregiving can be exhausting. Prioritizing yourself isn’t selfish—it’s necessary.
3. Find your people
I’m lucky to have my sisters by my side, but whether it’s family, friends, or an online support group, you need a
support system. Vent, cry, laugh—whatever keeps you going. This isn’t a solo mission, Superwoman. 😉Message me if needed! I'm right here in it with you!
Navigating this new chapter isn’t easy, but it’s a privilege to be there for the people who raised us. If you’re on this journey too, know that you’re not alone. I’ll be sharing more insights, tips, and real-life moments as I figure this all out—so stay tuned.
And if this post resonated with you, share it with a fellow caregiver. We’re in this together. ❤️
